That’s fabulous news! I haven’t seen the latest VP newsletter. It hasn’t arrived here yet. I’m looking forward to getting the new testing results. When I was going through my “oxalate free-for-all” after the boys were born I was using a lot of Stevia powder. I always wondered if it might have been lower in oxalate because I never had terrible flares after using it. It makes me wonder why it tested so high the other time though. Was it the same brand?

Stevia Powder was restested and it came up very low. I guess it was tested multiple times just to make sure that the results werent a fluke. I still havent worked up the courage to try it yet!

Unfortunately, only the highly-refined commercial versions of stevia have been tested–the refined powder which is high oxalate and the refined liquid drops which are low oxalate. Whole stevia leaves have not been tested, although I really hope they are tested soon! (If you are a member of the Trying Low Oxalates Group or the Vulvar Pain Foundation you can request items to be tested – a donation is helpful and appreciated but not required). I also have grown stevia, although I did not dry and grind the leaves. I used a leaf or two in sauces or drinks when I knew I wouldn’t eat a lot (not something I recommend for beginners or people who are in the healing phase of the diet). Recently, I’ve really cut back on my oxalate intake, however, so I no long fool with untested whole plant foods. There’s just no way to tell and if it is high oxalate.

It’s akin to the unrefined green stevia powder found in some health food stores. Do you know how this less processed version of stevia rates on the LOD scale?

The Sweet Leaf brand chocolate flavored liquid Stevia is also very low oxalate at 0.1 mg. oxalate per 8 drops. Powdered Stevia is HIGH oxalate though at 41.5 mg. per teaspoon.

I use liquid Stevia for most of my sweetening needs.
